What is this situation?

Permanent Temporary Mode — you enter it when something is presented as short-term, flexible, or “just for now,” but then the months keep stacking up without anything becoming solid. It can start with a fixed-term contract, a sublet, a probation period, a casual arrangement, or a person saying they cannot commit yet but still expecting you to stay available. But the people and systems around you keep extending the temporary terms without taking on the responsibility that stability would require. Your manager says the role may become permanent after the next review; the landlord says the lease can probably roll over month to month; the person you are seeing keeps acting close in private while avoiding any clear definition in public. You become fluent in soft deadlines, partial answers, and calendar reminders that decide whether you can relax next month. Your shoulders tighten every time a message starts with “just a quick update,” and your body learns to live beside packed boxes even when you have been in the same room for a year. The cost is not that you hate change; it is that the outside world keeps treating your life like a placeholder while still using your time, attention, money, and loyalty as if they were fully available, much like the figure on the Two of Pentacles, forced to keep juggling while the ships behind them rise and fall on uneven waves.

Why it's not you?

The problem is not that you are too indecisive or bad at settling down; the arrangement itself is built to keep you available without giving you security. Rolling contracts, unclear timelines, month-to-month terms, and undefined commitments are not neutral when they keep taking from your life without offering stable ground.
