You keep checking your inbox between errands, during work breaks, before bed, and first thing in the morning, because the whole process has trained you to be available even when no one is available to you. Interviews make it worse in their own way: you research the company, rehearse your answers, show up composed on video, send the follow-up email, and then watch days stretch into a silence that says nothing but still takes up space. Friends ask how the search is going, job boards keep showing the same reposted roles, and every “we’ve decided to move forward with other candidates” lands after hours of invisible labor no one saw you do.
