You draft an update, delete it, rewrite it so it sounds less boastful, then worry it sounds too flat; you hover over the post button while Slack keeps moving, while promotion language mentions “impact,” “presence,” and “stakeholder awareness” without saying exactly what is enough. In meetings, the people who speak first become the people remembered, even when your quieter work is holding the project together in the background. The pressure is not just to do the job, but to package yourself, time your visibility, make your competence easy to consume, and stay exposed long enough for the right people to notice without looking like you are trying too hard. Over time, the career ladder starts to feel less like a path and more like a stage with unclear lighting: every update, intro, portfolio line, public win, and casual networking message carries the risk of being ignored, misread, or judged. You are not standing still because nothing matters; you are standing still because the environment has turned being seen into another performance layer, much like the figure on the Seven of Wands, alone on uneven ground while raised wands from below demand a response from every direction.
