What is this situation?

Praise as Performance Contract — it starts in a meeting, a group chat, a performance review, or even a casual conversation where someone calls you "so reliable," "so easy to work with," or "the only one who really gets it." At first, the compliment sounds clean: a manager notices your extra effort, a friend thanks you for always being available, a partner says they love how low-maintenance you are. Then the praise begins arriving right before the request, right after you stretch yourself, or right when you are about to set a limit. You stay late because you are "such a team player." You take on the messy task because everyone says you are "better at handling it." You answer quickly because your calmness has become part of the arrangement. The room rewards the version of you that performs smoothly, stays pleasant, absorbs extra work, and does not make the hidden cost visible. When you hesitate, the warmth thins out; when you say no, the same people who praised you suddenly act confused, disappointed, or distant. Over time, the compliment stops feeling like recognition and starts feeling like a signature line you never agreed to, much like the rider on the Six of Wands, lifted into public view with a wreath on display while the surrounding crowd expects the raised staff to stay raised.

Why it's not you?

The issue is not that you are ungrateful or unable to receive appreciation.
